"50% off – Today Only!" Does spotting this sign race your heart? Well, it’s the power of scarcity at work.

Scarcity in marketing is a psychological trick that makes us value things more when they're rare or about to disappear.

By making a product hard to find or available for only a short time, scarcity marketing plays on our fear of missing out (FOMO)  and makes us want what's in high demand and not easy to get. It's a smart strategy that taps into our longing for things we see as valuable and rare.

McDonald's McRib is an iconic example of scarcity in marketing. It's only available periodically, creating a frenzy every time it returns. People line up, tweet about it, and even plan road trips to satisfy their McRib cravings. Why? Because it's a rare treat, and scarcity has made it iconic.
